This piece was loosely inspired by a series of reflections I had last year, months into the pandemic, on the idea of memory. Following three particular dreams, I found myself pondering on the ways in which we remember immediate experiences, and consequently the way those recollections change with time. Each of the three movements was initially informed by a particular sentiment that permeated such reflections, and this provided the foundation upon which I could craft a musical narrative.
Three Apparitions at Twilight was commissioned by Tim Weiss and the Contemporary Music Ensemble, and written for harpist Hannah Allen.
