FLAME
for alto flute and alto saxophone (2018)
written for Awea Duo
This piece aims to create an environment that is opposite of what our chaotic world is used to: clear, still, quiet. When writing this piece, I made an effort to create a physically still environment to rid of the thoughts and doubts that constantly run through my mind. At one point, this allowed my mind to slip into a space between consciousness and unconsciousness, subconsciously knowing that I was awake but having an emptied mind otherwise. It is this sort of powerful meditative state that I aim to create in this piece.
Most pieces seek to convey some message or evoke some emotion; however, Flame seeks to be a “thought-calming” experience, transporting the audience’s minds to a period of stillness far away from our otherwise chaotic lives.
