CATHEDRAL GLASS

for solo viola (2015)

I wrote Cathedral Glass as not only my first solo piece but also as my first time writing for the viola. I sought to explore its various technical and expressive capabilities while inspired by the image of light passing through the stained glass found in churches and cathedrals. Such light is delicate and soft but so beautiful, and thus I attempted to convey this soft radiance in the melody of the piece, which appears in both the lowest, richest range of the viola as well as in its highest, more delicate range.
